Some of my earliest memories—the kind that I just have glimmers and blurry images of—are of time spent in Yellowstone Park. It was an easy day trip from Blackfoot, Idaho when my father was a band teacher at Snake River H.S. near Blackfoot, Idaho. I actually remember seeing bears along the road from West Yellowstone to Madison Jct., and on in to Old Faithful. I remember camping at Old Faithful Village, before it was all revamped and they took the campground out.
So, when I went to BYU-Idaho’s Mothers’ Weekend the end of May, and there wasn’t much to tempt us to stay around
campus on Saturday afternoon, Bekah, Hannah, and I decided to make a quick trip to West Yellowstone. I love the drive past St. Anthony, and Ashton, Island Park and Mack’s Inn. We stopped for a few pictures as we crossed the Continental Divide and entered Montana.

West Yellowstone is very charming and sleepy in late May. We parked near the Imax theater and wandered in and out of shops for a couple hours. It was fun to see Dick’s Sarah May, working for the summer in one of the shops. We got the giggles over some goofy welcome mats (for the easily amused, which we were!) . We went to the Imax movie about Yellowstone, and ate at a great little diner. The only bad part was that I was within a stone’s throw the park entrance, but I couldn’t justify the entrance fee of $25 for a couple hours drive in to Old Faithful and back.
I spent a lovely after noon with two of my daughters. The only improvement would have been if the entire family was there. Although Frank probably would have lost interest in the shops after the 2nd one! Thanks, Bekah and Hannah for a great day!
