Saturday, Feb 12, was our first of two full days at sea. I really love spending the day at sea. I love having time for a leisurely breakfast in the dining room. I’m sure the breakfast buffet is really fun. But in the dining room I don’t have to stand in line and I have Heru stopping by from time to time offering another danish or raisin bun. I have an entire menu of yummy choices to choose from. Speaking of which—Dinah had the same choices and after great contemplation she settled on----Froot Loops.
In her defense, we don’t normally buy Froot Loops.
Caleb immediately discovered that he liked to start things off with a couple lemon danishes, a croissant and a parfiat. Follow that with cinnamon French Toast, and a fruit plate to top things off.
The butter came tastefully presented such that it was hard to dip into it the first day.
My favorite breakfast, well there were two, turned out to be the vegetable omelet
or the Eggs Royale—English Muffin, Salmon, and poached egg, with a Hollandaise Sauce.
Mmmmmm………………
After breakfast, the kids headed for Club Hal, and the Teen Club. Dinah’s area was for 9-13 year-olds. Caleb—14-17. They both promptly made friends with siblings from Calgary, Canada, who coincidentally turned out to be LDS. That was a happy discovery. They met other kids, but were sometimes a bit put off by rough language, or such. It was fun for them to find a place for activities that appealed to them. We saw them off and on throughout the day..
At dinner, Ari and Verry surprised Dinah with a piece of birthday cake. They lit a candle, and grabbed a third server and they sang Happy Birthday, in great three-part harmony.
It was a fun surprise. I hadn’t clued anybody in, but her birthday was listed on her ship registration, so I suppose they made a special tag to the servers.
That night there was a great show by the Oosterdam Singers and Dancers—Stage and Screen. Wonderful show tunes. Last night we attended just a little preview show, introducing the performers. Turns out one of the singers is a young man from Provo. We talked to him later at the buffet. He said he’s been with the ship for just a week and a half. He is a BYU student, working to get in to grad school, getting his PhD in Psychology. This job came along and he figured that in the 3 month commitment he made with Holland America he can pay for Grad school. He’s pretty good. I’d be interested to know if sang with Vocal Point, or the Young Ambassadors. He’s pretty darn good. Anyway, back to the show. It was fantastic. I enjoyed just one of the shows on Carnival last year. It was pretty good. The shows on the Oosterdam were head and shoulders better—talent-wise, quality-wise, and entertainment-wise. WOW!
The pictures don’t do he performance justice. Singing in the Rain was darling, Hairspray was fun. At one point they were doing kind of a wild version of Aquarius. I was wondering if the “older” people in the audience would appreciate that number. Then I realized that they were most likely in high school or college when that number was popular! I guess I had more in common with the “older audience” than I cared to admit!
I would cruise with Holland America again simply for the shows.
