One of the highlights of our recent trip to Nauvoo and such was the night we spent in Carthage, IL. We arrived on a very hot, MUGGY evening, just in time for the service, commemorating the martyrdom After the service, we started looking for a place to stay in Carthage. The jail Visitors’ Center was closed for the evening after the service and we wanted to spend some time there the next morning. We set our trusty little GPS to looking for a likely spot to stay. It didn’t find the one little motel in the town, and took of to two driveways of private residences. So much for that! In the course of driving around, we passed a Bed and Breakfast--
We all oohed and ahhed, and drove around for a few more minutes. When we realized that we had two choices—tiny little motel, clean, fair-priced, ordinary; or B&B—WOW—we had a short discussion about what to do. Sarah commented on how much fun it would be to stay there “just one night!” Frank said, “yes, it would be fun.” I waited for the “but it’s just not in our budget”, or “it’s not very practical” but it never came. He pulled up into the driveway and proceeded to register. We unloaded our stuff, with the help of the lady that runs the B&B. She was SO charming and accommodating.
Here are some pictures of our evening!--
Entrance from the front verandah. Sarah kept ringing the doorbell!
Spiral Staircase
Two parlors
The turret
Up the stairs to the third floor was our bedroom.
Playing cards on the verandah, fireflies on the grass and in the bushes.
Quiche and cowboy potatoes for breakfast.
One final walk around the parlors before we checked out.
With our gracious hostess!
We had to get over the impulse to say, “Come hither.” and “Make haste!” as we drove to tour the Carthage Jail. It was a delightful evening!
